The Serapis Flag was an accidental flag. John Paul Jones, a U.S. Captain during the Revolutionary War, took over a ship called the Serapis, but his ship was sunk during the battle. He sailed to the island port of Texel without a flag and was thought to be a pirate. So he created a flag by the description of the American Flag he had but misinterpreted it. The end result was the Serapis Flag.
