Flag Adopted 2 December 1992

Created shortly after the victory in the civil war by the mujahideen this flag displays the green of Islam, the black strip in remembrance of past afghan flags and the new coat of arms of the country.

The coat of arms depicts a mosque with the traditional mihrab (mark on the wall showing the direction of the holy city of Mecca).

The Arabic inscription reads 1371 (the year of the civil war victory on the Muslim calendar (1992 AD). It also contains a verse from the Koran, "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the Prophet of Allah."
