Bhutan is a local word of "Land of the Dragon". The dragon is the national symbol. The claws grasp jewels (signifying wealth). The snarl of the dragon signifies the strength of the male and female gods protecting the country.

The background colors have varied over the years with the top saffron yellow indicating the secular power of the ruling king (Wangchuck dynasty) and the orange representing the primary religion of the people - Buddhism.
