adopted 1889

Once a Portuguese colony, Brazil declared its independence in 1822 when a member of the Portuguese royal family (who had fled to Brazil between 1807 and 1821, left to regain their thrones from Napoleon) seized control and had himself crowned as Emperor. At that time the flag has the same green field and yellow diamond, but had the royal coat of arms in the center.

Later when Brazil became a Republic on November 15, 1889, the coat of arms was changed to a view of the night sky over Rio De Janeiro on that night. The inscription on the flag is in Portuguese and reads "Order and Progress".
