Georgia Flag (country)

Flag Adopted 1990

Initially this flag design was a winner in a national contest in 1917, however it was suppressed during the time that Georgia was under Soviet rule.

This flag was readopted after Georgia broke away from the former USSR. The wine/red color is said to be the national color of Georgia, symbolizing joy and happiness.

The black stripe represents the tragic past of Georgia and the white the hopeful future.
