Germany Flag

Dating back to the Weimar Republic in Germany (1919-1933) this flag was used by both East and West Germany during the cold war. The East German version included a Communist symbol in the center as the only differing point.

When the two German areas re-united in 1990 the West German version of the flag was adopted to represent the unified Germany.

Originally the colors black, red and yellow were taken from the uniform colors of the "Black Jager" - volunteers who fought against Napoleon from 1813-1815. Later however, the colors were given new meanings by a German politician and poet, Ferdinand Freiligrath, when he indicated that the black was for gunpowder, the red for blood and the yellow the glow given off by the fire.
