Greece Flag

Adopted 1978

Although several versions of this flag have been used to represent Greece the one above is the currently flag adopted in 1978.

The Greek flag as it is now dates back to the Greek War for Independence against the Ottomans from 1821-1832. Overall it appears to have been inspired by the flag of the United States with the nine stripes not representing districts or states but the nine syllables in the Greek freedom slogan from the struggle for Independence - "Eleutheria i Thanatos" ("Liberty or Death").

The cross has Christian meanings but vary according in interpretation. The blue and white are the traditional sea faring colors of the Greeks.
