India Flag

Flag Adopted 22 July 1947

Adopted upon independence in 1947 this flag is based on the flag of the Indian National Congress, the group behind the push for independence.

The orange color represents sacrifice and courage of the people, the green is for faith, fertility and chivalry, the white for peace and truth and the blue indicates the sky and ocean.

The center symbol is called a "Chakra". It is a Buddhist symbol dating back to 200 BC. It has 24 spokes (one for each hour of the day) and intends to show that there is life in movement and death in stagnation.
