Iran Flag

Flag Adopted 1980

Based on the traditional red white and green colors that have always represented this region the Iranian flag is largely the product of the Islamic Revolution of 1980.

The green is the traditional color of Islam.

The center object is a sword (representing strength) in a globe (for the power of the worlds downtrodden peoples). Overall the four crescents making up the sword and globe represent the growth of the Muslim faith. There are additional composite representations of many basic Islamic tenets: Allah, the Book, balance, unity, neutrality and the power of the downtrodden peoples of the world.

There is also an inner boarder of Kufic Script which reads "Allahu Akbar" ("God is Great") and is repeated 22 times (the date on the Islamic Calendar in which the exiled Ayatollah Khomeini returned to Iran.
