Italy Flag

Due to Napoleons conquest on the Italian peninsula, the Italian flag was heavily influenced by the French and their tricolor flag. In fact, the flags are identical with the one exception that the Italian flag has a green stripe where the French has a blue one. One legend explains that it was discovered that Napoleon's favorite color was green and that this change was made to please him.

Later this flag continued to represent this region with only the addition of a royal coat of arms representing whatever monarchy was in power at the time.

In 1946, Italy declared itself a republic in the wake of World War II and the royal coat of arms was removed.
