Japan Flag Adopted 1870 Japan's name means "The Land of the Rising Sun" and its rulers have long claimed to be direct descendants of the sun goddess called Amaterasu Omikami. The symbol of the red disc (called the Hiinomaru) has existed in Japan for hundreds of years but was not made part of their flag until 1870. The white of the flag represents honesty and purity and the red stands for sincerity and passion. |
