Flag Adopted 1991

Upon the break up of the Soviet Union Russia reverted back to a flag first adopted in the 17th century by Peter the Great. On a trip to Europe Peter the Great decided to adopt a variation on the flag of the Netherlands.

Because of the influence of Russia in Europe these colors have come to be referred to as the Pan-Slavic colors.
