Flag Adopted 1973

The green background of this flag symbolizes the underlying Islamic belief of the country. Green is thought by the Wahabi sect to have been the favored color of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad.

The inscription on the flag is called the "shahada" and is the Muslim "Statement of Faith". It reads "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the Prophet of Allah."

The sword is that of the national hero, Abd-al-Aziz, who conquered most of Arabia in the early 20th century.
