Turkmenistan Flag

Flag Adopted 1997

Adopted after a national competition this flag has a green background with a moon (traditional in Islamic areas). The five starts represent the five new regions created since the country broke away from the former USSR.

The band on the left side is made up of four of the traditional tribal carpet patterns. Turkmenistan is famous for its production of high quality hand made rugs and carpet with each main tribe having its signature weave.

Sometimes there is a wreath, as seen on the UN flag, placed at the bottom of the bands. This represents the vow of neutrality taken by Turkmenistan in 1995.
