United States of America (USA) Flag This is the current flag of the United States of America. It has 50 stars - one for each state in the union and 13 stripes - one for each of the original 13 colonies. The current 50 star version was adopted shortly after Alaska gained statehood on January 3, 1959. It has been said that the three colors - red, white and blue also have meanings. Red for valor and hardiness, white indicating innocence and purity and blue standing for justice, perseverance and vigilance. The United States flag is the only flag which flies over a planetary body besides Earth (moon).
