New Jersey Flag Became a US State: 1787 Flag Adopted 1896 The buff colored field is the same as the colors of the uniforms worn by the state militia in the the Revolutionary war. The tow figures holding up the central shield are Liberty and Ceres (the Greek goddess of agriculture). Also featured on the Shield are three ploughs and a horse (again for agriculture). The armored helmet stands for the sovereignty of the state. The State motto is also included at the bottom: "Liberty and Prosperity".
