South Carolina Flag

Became a US State: 1788

Flag Adopted 1861

This flag features the State tree, the palmetto. The story goes that during 1776, during the war of Independence, Fort Moultrie (made from palmetto wood) on Sullivans Island  successfully fended off a determined attack by the British (in oak ships). The state seal (not on flag) shows a palmetto growing out of a rotten oak.

The crescent also goes back to the War of Independence when South Carolina soldiers proudly wore a crescent with he motto "Liberty or Death".
