Flag of Virginia

Virginia Flag

Became a US State: 1788

Flag Adopted 1861

This flag features the state seal with a victorious warrior (Virtue) after slaying a tyrant (note the tyrant is still clutching a broken chain and a crown has fallen to the ground nearby). The tyrant on the flag is not the king of England, it was in fact, Abraham Lincoln in response to his Civil War abolitionist views. Just below that is the state motto: "Sic Semper Tyrannis" ("Thus Always to Tyrants").
